How to beat The Captain

The Captain is the veteran skipper you play against offline. It plays fair, it plays well, and it has habits you can use.

Who is The Captain?

The Captain is Football Duel's computer opponent, always available from the Play vs The Captain button. By default it plays The Captain's Armada: Liverpool and Barcelona, with Yamal, Gerrard, Ronaldinho, Puyol, Guardiola and the golden Messi. You can pick any other built-in deck for it under Opponent's deck.

What it can and can't see

The Captain plays by the same rules as you. It never looks at your hand or at your face-down cards: a player you set face-down in Defense mode is a mystery to it, and so is every Referee card you set. It only knows what is face-up on the pitch.

How it decides to attack

It attacks face-up players it can beat, preferring trades that send off your strongest player for the least damage.
It is careful with face-down defenders: it only attacks one with a player strong enough to be safe against most of them.
It brings its big players on as soon as it can pay the substitutions, so its stars arrive early.
It answers your moves with its own set cards when they help, just like a human would.

Plays that beat it

Set your best defender face-down. A hidden 2000+ DEF player makes The Captain hesitate, and an attack into it costs it Fan Support.
Bait its stars. When a big star comes on, have a Referee card ready: Tactical Foul or Offside Trap turns its best attack into nothing.
Keep a finisher. The Captain defends its Fan Support less well than its players. Save a Nutmeg or a Penalty Kick for the last 1500.
Use your Comeback card. If you fall 1500 behind, The 12th Man or Remontada arrives on your next draw. Plan your big turn around it.
Build around one club. A Stadium for a deck full of one club gives every player a bonus The Captain has to beat on every battle.

Then try real players

Beating The Captain regularly means you're ready for online play. Matches against The Captain don't count for the online rating or the reward card streak, so when you want those, try Quick match.
